About the UCT Student Sports Union
The University of Cape Town Student Sports Union (SSU) is the official governing body for all student sports at UCT, established to foster a vibrant, inclusive, and unified sporting community. It serves as a vital platform for student-athletes to develop their skills, engage in leadership opportunities, and participate in a diverse range of sporting activities.
The SSU operates as a unitary structure, bringing together affiliated sports clubs under a common vision of inclusivity, excellence, and transformation. Rooted in principles of non-racialism, non-sexism, and democracy, the SSU is committed to creating equitable access to sporting opportunities for all students, regardless of their background.
Our Vision and Mission
The SSU envisions a UCT where sport is more than just physical activity—it is a unifying force, a means of personal growth, and a way to build lasting connections. To achieve this, the SSU focusses on:
- Encouraging participation in sports at all levels of ability.
- Promoting leadership development and skills training for student-athletes.
- Facilitating collaboration between UCT sports clubs and external organisations.
- Advocating for fair play, inclusivity, and student representation in all sporting matters.

- This committee liaises with UCT’s Sports Council, SRC, and other governance structures to ensure alignment with university policies.
-
Member Clubs
- Each sports club at UCT operates as an affiliated member under the SSU umbrella. These clubs adhere to the SSU constitution and participate in union-led initiatives.
- Clubs are supported through grants, training opportunities, and resources provided by the SSU and UCT’s Sport & Recreation Department.
-
Sub-Committees
- Focused on specific areas such as transformation, outreach, discipline, and inter-university collaboration, these committees play a critical role in driving the SSU’s objectives.
Membership
Membership of the SSU is open to all UCT students through their participation in affiliated sports clubs. The SSU also confers honorary memberships on individuals who have made exceptional contributions to UCT’s sporting community.
Key Responsibilities and Activities
The SSU is responsible for a wide range of activities and initiatives, including:
- Sporting Governance: Establishing policies and ensuring member clubs adhere to governance frameworks that align with UCT’s rules and values.
- Competitions and Events: Organizing inter-varsity tournaments, community outreach programs, and campus-wide sporting events.
