As a current student of UCT and a member of the UCT Water Polo Club, I’ve had the honour of representing South Africa on the international stage - first with the U20 team in 2022 and most recently as part of the South African Ladies team at a tournament in Turkey this past December.

There truly is no greater privilege than wearing your country’s colours, stepping into the pool arena with your teammates and singing the National Anthem. It is a moment that is filled with immense pride and excitement. Competing against some of the world’s top athletes presented both a challenge as well as a learning experience.

The tournament in Turkey was a true test. With only a few days together before the competition started, we had to build team chemistry quickly. Our squad was relatively young, with some players only matriculating at the end of 2024. Despite these challenges, we embraced the opportunity to grow, adapt and compete at a high level.

Personally, water polo has taught me both discipline and the importance of teamwork. Every training session is an opportunity to push my limits and improve, and I am incredibly grateful for the experiences and opportunities this sport has given me.
