The University of Cape Town Athletics Club is a club for students and staff members of the University of Cape Town who share a common goal of participating in the sport of Athletics.

Athletics is defined as covering Cross Country, Race Walking, Road Running, Track & Field and Trail Running. The club aspires to covering all these elements of the sport.

Although the club caters for students and staff members of the university, there is provision for 'external' (ie non-students or -staff) members to join.

The club's focus is on senior athletes, although it does cater for juniors and masters as well.

The UCT Athletics Club is based at the Groote Schuur Oval, Middle Campus, UCT.

We have access to a non-standard length, three-lane, grass track. Although it is non-standard, it is accurately measured and has been the home training base for many generations of UCT athletes, including sub-4 minute milers and several provincial athletes. In addition there is a long jump pit (grass run-up) and discus and shot put circles. The club will also has access to the Green Point Athletics Stadium for training purposes. However, this will be limited to specific times and subject to strict conditions.

The Groote Schuur Oval is bordered on the north side by Woolsack Drive. It is next to Bremner Building and Woolsack Residence.

The UCT Athletics Club strives to cater for all the disciplines of the sport of Athletics. These include;

  • Cross Country
  • Race Walking
  • Road Running
  • Track & Field

We also strive to cater for beginner, social, competitive and elite athletes.

The Cape Town Cross Country season runs from May to the provincial championships in August each year. The national championships and the national student championships are typically held in September.

The Track & Field season starts in October and runs through to April each year. The provincial championships are usually in March, with the national junior, senior and student championships taking place on different weekends in April.

Road Races are held throughout the year.

Historically, the club has not been a strong participant in race walking, but does cater for those who wish to compete in race walking races. The WPA has a couple of race walking leagues scheduled each year. Further, race walking is included in USSA Track & Field Championships.

Open

The club's squad training times are from 17:30 to (approximately) 18:30 on Mondays to Thursdays all year round.

During winter months training may change due to the early sunset. Training changes according to the time of the season and is dictated by the racing schedule of the athletes concerned. Individual sessions are sometime organised between the coaches and the athletes.

For new members, before joining, it is advisable to contact the coaches or the captains to find out what sessions are planned before just arriving at the club, as it is possible that the day you come to the club is a rest or competition day.

Open

The UCT Athletics Club is open to all students, alumni and staff members of the University of Cape Town.

They can join the club by visiting Sports Administration in the UCT Sports Centre, on Upper Campus. The club will also have a stand at the Plaza during Orientation Week, where members can also sign up. The membership fee for students, alumni and university staff members for 2024 is R1500.

In order to compete at any athletics events in South Africa it is necessary to be in possession of a licence.  The cost of the licence is included in your annual membership fee. For all events in Cape Town it is also possible to purchase a temporary licence number for that particular competition. This is done when entering the competition.
